Iron Infusion Consultation

Iron Infusion Consultation

Independent GPs consulting at participating MyClinic locations can assess iron deficiency and determine whether an iron infusion may be appropriate for your individual circumstances.

During your consultation, your doctor may:

  • Review your symptoms, medical history and any relevant blood test results.
  • Discuss the possible causes of iron deficiency.
  • Explain available treatment options, including dietary measures, oral iron supplements and iron infusions where clinically appropriate.
  • Develop an individual management plan.

If an iron infusion is recommended following assessment, your doctor will discuss the potential benefits and risks, and what to expect during the procedure.

What is an iron infusion?

An iron infusion is a treatment that delivers iron directly into the bloodstream through an intravenous (IV) line.

Iron infusions may be considered when iron levels are low and oral iron supplements have not been effective, are not well tolerated, or when your doctor determines that intravenous iron may be appropriate.

Before an iron infusion is arranged, a GP will review your symptoms, medical history and relevant blood test results to determine whether this treatment is suitable for you.

Preparing for your iron infusion consultation

Before your appointment, please bring any recent blood test results or relevant medical information if these are not already available to your GP.

During your consultation, your GP will review your iron levels, symptoms and medical history and discuss whether an iron infusion may be appropriate for you.

Your GP can also explain what to expect before, during and after an iron infusion, including potential benefits and risks and any follow-up blood tests or appointments that may be required.
